The recipe for success by Jon Olsson

November 30, 2015 by Iselin Næss

He never unpacks from his Douchebags. He gets up at 6 am on Sundays. He always aims to do better, and get stuff done. When other people quit, he continues. So how does he do it? We did a quick touch down with the skier/ entrepreneur / blogger / racecar-enthusiast: Jon Olsson.

What are your skiing plans this season?
I am still trying to figure this out. I have worked too much this fall and I haven´t had time to set a plan. But now that I´m back on skis I´m starting to formulate one. Step one is to just ski a ton so I can find the comfort level and learn to do as much as possible. I do love big jumps so that´s where most of my focus will be and try to do this at as many cool places as possible!

Will we see you in any new ski movies in the future?
I love movies and I would love to be a part of it, but with social media being as strong as it is and since I have big communication channels there, I think that´ s where my focus will be. I do miss the years of filming as it was so cool to see everything when it came out in the fall. But as the world is changing I have to try to change with it!

We know you´re a guy with a lot of projects going on. Can you tell us what you spend most of your time doing these days?

Well to be honest most of my time is directed towards Douchebags. The company is growing so fast right now and I´m actually a true bag nerd, so I end up working way too much with this, as I love it! Besides that I have a lot of big car projects in the making. Nothing set in stone yet, but we have some serious adventures in the planning!

From the outside it looks as though you have an extreme amount of energy and a lot more than 24 hours a day. What´s your secret for getting stuff done?
Haha, well I wish I had more! I did quit drinking 6 months ago as I felt that I did not have time to be hungover, so that has given me a few extra days a month. I get up 6 on Sundays and I try to always do my best. Maybe not the most social life, but I love the feeling of getting stuff done so that´s why I´ve chosen this way of living! If I work hard now I hope that I can chill more in the future! I think the main secret for my motivation is that I never feel like I do enough. Ever!

I did work on a project 10 years ago that brought me so much frustration that I hit the wall and was out for a month. So I do try to pick my battles and not take on too much.

It also looks like everything you touch turns to gold; What´s your secret recipe for success?
I wish that was true. I have done a lot of things that didn´t work out, but I guess the more I work and the more I try, the more you learn and the more you can accomplish! I do think and analyze everything a ton. Janni always tells me to stop thinking and not worry so much, but that´s not how my brain is wired. I just think, think and think about every detail in life!

Have you had any hard experiences that taught you something important?
I have had a lot of them. I did work on a project 10 years ago that brought me so much frustration that I hit the wall and was out for a month. So I do try to pick my battles and not take on too much. I still suck at this and end up with too much stuff on my plate. As soon as I say no to things and get my life under control I end up taking on new things. I guess I always feel that I don´t do enough. I feel that I can always do more and do things better.

Can you share something you´re really proud to have achieved?
I think that the two things that I´m the most proud of is the invention of a lot of double flips,. Being able to push things to a new level is never easy and I am very happy that I was a part of this! I consider this way more important for me than the medals I have won. The second thing is Douchebags. I remember that 7-8 years ago I visited POC at their office and thought that one day I am going to start a company that has an office like this and a full on kick ass organization. Over the past years we´ve come a long way and I feel very proud to have been a part of this journey.

Traveling has been a huge part of your life so far. Do you ever get tired of such a hectic lifestyle?

Haha, well yesterday I skied in Austria in the morning and drove 670 km back home to Monaco at night. It sure is hectic and I love coming home to Monaco for a few days, but as soon as I spend more than a week at home I just feel like I should do more and end up travelling somewhere for either pleasure or work. I have lived this way for almost 20 years so I don´t know any other life. But I do love most of it even if I am not the biggest fan of hotels! Haha.

Do you ever unpack your Douchebags?
Rarely. Last time I did it was to be able to squeeze in all my gear in the Lambo as it doesn´t have space for bags, so I had to put my jeans in front of the drivers seat! Haha, but living in bags 365 days a year does help me learn a lot about bags, so it´s fun to put that knowledge into the products we make!
